Azalea expert Jim Thornton and his wife Patsy James O. Thornton (Jim) is the Founder and first President of the Oconee Chapter of the Azalea Society of America. He has held office of Director, VicePresident and President of the Azalea Society of America. He is Member of the Committee on the Great Gardens of American Preservation Alliance and is presently the first Chairman of the Azalea Research Foundation.

Jim is co-author of the award winning power point Cd presentation and Georgia Extension Publication "Selecting and Growing Azaleas". This was a cooperative project with the University of Georgia and the Oconee Chapter /ASA. Jim received the Award for the Outstanding Extension Publication from the American Society for Horticultural Science. Publication can be viewed by accessing the internet. The Cd can be purchased from the Oconee Chapter.

Jim developed the Oconee Chapter of the Azalea Society Web Site or you can view on You Tube by searching "Azaleas Oconee". He has also published many articles concerning the azalea, the Society and related aspects thereof in the Journal of the Azalea Society, "The Azalean."

Jim and his wife maintain their own personal garden of several thousand azaleas consisting of hundreds of varieties. Needless to say, their garden is a sight to behold.
